I was introduced to Carolyn Carter at the Wheelmen 50th National Meet on June 30, 2017, my friends Tim and Kimberly Schmidt, after meeting Carolyn, she proceeded to tell me her story while allowing me to take her portrait. The bike Carolyn is posing with belongs to a fellow Wheelmen, and is a fair representation of her bike, except for not having nickel finish. Due to some traveling her bike was unfortunately not traveling with her.
Carolyn Carter became the first woman to ride a high-wheel, penny-farthing-style bicycle across the United States, covering 3,294 miles (5,301km), beginning on 28 May in San Francisco and finishing on July 30 in Boston.
Carolyn rode a 46-inch high-wheel between 50-60 miles (80-96km) per day, following the same route used by Thomas Stevens, the first cyclist to ride a bike around the world in 1884.Caroly is a member of The Wheelmen.
